Produktdetails

Wingspan is a competitive, medium-weight, card-driven, engine-building board game from Stonemaier Games.

You are bird enthusiasts—researchers, bird watchers, ornithologists, and collectors—seeking to discover and attract the best birds to your network of wildlife preserves. Each bird extends a chain of powerful combinations in one of your habitats (actions). These habitats focus on several key aspects of growth:

  • Gain food tokens via custom dice in a birdfeeder dice tower
  • Lay eggs using egg miniatures in a variety of colors
  • Draw from hundreds of unique bird cards and play them

The winner is the player with the most points after 4 rounds.

If you enjoy Terraforming Mars and Gizmos, we think this game will take flight at your table.

Which game is the original version of Wingspan?

Wingspan is available in both English and German. You can recognize it by the title. If it’s called "Wingspan," it’s in English; if it’s called "Flügelschlag," it’s in German.

Can the bird cards from the Wingspan base game be swapped out for the bird cards from the expansion and then play the base game with those?

Theoretically, yes. But it is intended that the new birds are simply added to the old ones, giving you a larger selection. Also, I would say that the round goals and bonus cards would no longer work sensibly if the base cards are not included.

Are there cards with robins, sparrows, and tits included?

Yes, field and house sparrows, great tit, and robin are included in Wingspan. According to the community, the game is most enjoyable with the European expansion, as most of the birds are somewhat familiar or at least recognizable.

Does the European expansion for Wingspan also include additional food tokens?

Yes, each expansion includes additional food tokens, but not always new types of food. The Oceania expansion introduces a new food type, "nectar."

Can you play with just one expansion (birds of Europe or Asia), or do you need the base game?

To play, you need the base game of Wingspan.

Can Wingspan be played with younger children (under 8 years old)?

In our opinion, the game is not suitable for children under 8 years old. The game mechanics are a bit too complex and are therefore more suitable for adults or older children.

Can you play Wingspan with friends over Skype?

Yes, it’s possible. However, each player needs the base game. For the food, you can simply announce what is in the birdfeeder and adjust the food accordingly.

Components of Wingspan:

  • 1 game board per player (depicting forest, grassland, and wetland habitats)
  • 1 birdfeeder dice tower
  • 5 custom dice
  • 170 bird cards
  • 26 bonus cards
  • 16 Automa cards (for solo play)
  • 75 egg miniatures
  • 5 player mats
  • 40 action cubes (8 in each player color)
  • 103 food tokens (fish, rodent, seed, fruit, invertebrate)
  • 8 goal tiles
  • 1 first-player token
  • 1 scorepad
  • Rulebook

  1. Game Board: Each player takes a player mat.
  2. Bird Cards: Shuffle the bird cards and place the deck face down. Deal 5 bird cards to each player.
  3. Bonus Cards: Shuffle the bonus cards and deal 2 to each player. Each player keeps 1 and discards the other.
  4. Food Tokens: Place the food tokens within reach.
  5. Birdfeeder: Assemble the birdfeeder dice tower and roll the 5 custom dice into it.
  6. Egg Miniatures: Place the egg miniatures within reach.
  7. Goal Board and Tiles: Place the goal board in the center and randomly select and place 4 goal tiles (one for each round).
  8. First Player: Give the first-player token to the player who most recently went bird-watching.
  9. Starting Resources: Each player starts with 1 food token of each type. Players may choose to keep fewer bird cards and gain additional food tokens for each card not kept.

Objective:

The goal is to score the most points by attracting birds, laying eggs, accumulating food, and achieving bonus objectives.

Wingspan Gameplay:

  1. Rounds: The game is played over 4 rounds, each consisting of a series of turns where players use their action cubes to perform actions.
  2. Actions: Play a Bird OR Gain Food OR Lay Eggs OR Draw Bird Cards.
  3. Activating Birds: When taking actions in a habitat, activate the bird abilities from right to left in the same row.

End of Round:

  1. Goals: At the end of each round, check the goal board to see which players have met the round's goal and distribute points accordingly.
  2. Reset: Reset the birdfeeder and replenish the bird card row.
  3. Move Action Cubes: Move your action cube to the next round's goal space.

End of Game:

  1. Scoring: After 4 rounds, players score points based on:
  2. Determine Winner: The player with the most points wins Wingspan.

Special Rules:

  • Bird Powers: Birds have different powers that trigger in various phases:
    1. When Played
    2. Once Between Turns
    3. When Activated

Fabulous game

Definitely favorite game of my playing career. Could play daily, in spite of tendency to lose (am too goal oriented).
